Krum Public Library unveils technology for expanded accessibility

Krum Public Library and the Krum Lion’s Club will host an Accessibility Open House, Saturday, September 19th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. They will be showcasing the cutting edge technology for expanded accessibility that is now available to patrons. New items include; computer tables that are height adjustable; a touch screen computer for patrons with limited dexterity; Zoom text software that enlarges text and can change screen and or text color that can help people with various vision problems and learning disabilities such as dyslexia; Guide software that will read text from either the computer or from material that has been scanned. The library also has various kinds of magnifiers, some of which may be checked out for use at home. For patrons that are hard of hearing webcams, headsets and software have been purchased that will allow internet video relay service. For patrons that have difficulty opening the door a ringer is now available to alert staff that they need help entering the library
Krum is the only Denton county library and one of only eight libraries in North Texas that offers this kind of access for people with special needs. It is one of eight Pilot Project libraries that received a grant through the North Texas Library Partners, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The other libraries that received this grant are all in Tarrant county and include Fort Worth and Arlington.
